Physical Description

Paper, about 8 1/2 in. by 7, consisting of 231 leaves, some of which are slightly stained and soiled, especially fol. 2. The quires, signed with letters (by a later hand), are 23 in number. There are from 22 to 31 lines in each page.

Hand 1 (major, Unspecified Syriac script): This volume is written in a good, regular hand of about the xiiith cent., with numerous Greek and Syriac vowels and other points.
Hand 2 (minor, Unspecified Syriac script): A few leaves are more modern, apparently of the xvith cent., viz. foll. 2 — 9, 18, 80 — 87, 230, and 231.
Hand 3 (minor, Unspecified Syriac script): The quires, signed with letters by a later hand.
Hand 4 (minor, Unspecified Syriac script): The name of the person who transcribed the later portions of the volume, seems to have been Phil(oxenus). See also Addition 1 and Addition 2.

Notes:
  • The name of the author does not seem to be mentioned, unless perhaps in the title, fol.2 b, which has been almost wholly effaced, partly, as it would appear, on purpose. According to a manuscript in the University Library of Berlin, the author's name is Jacob bar ܫܟܟܘ., or bar 'Isa(ܥܝܣܐ, ܥܣܘ), bishop of Tagrit. The work is divided into two books, the first containing four dialogues and a discourse, the second two dialogues.

Addition 1 (Fol. 82a): The name of the person who transcribed the later portions of the volume, seems to have been Phil(oxenus). See fol. 82 a ܕܩ̇ܪܐ ܢܨܲܠܐ ܥܠ ܏ܦܝܠ ܚܲܛܝܐ
Addition 2 (Fol. 197b): Also see fol. 197 b, where Phil(oxenus) has copied a marginal note in the handwriting of the Catholicus Abu '1-Faraj ܘܗܕܐ ܟܬܒ̇ܬܗ̇ ܐܢܐ ܦ܏ܝܠ ܚܛܝܐ ܡܢ ܟ̇ܪܬ ܐܝ̣ܕܗ ܕܗ̇ܘ ܕܟܝܪ ܒܝܬ ܩܕ̈ܝܫܐ ܐܒܘ ܐܠܦܪܓ ܩܐ܏ܬܘ.
Addition 3 (Fol. 230b): On fol. 230 b there is a note, stating that the book once belonged to the metropolitan Dioscorus, who had it by inheritance from the patriarch John; but that it had been exchanged with the monk of the village of ----, for a medical work in Arabic, entitled. This note was written by one Timothy, who bound and repaired the book,A. Gr. 1878, A.D. 1567.
Addition 4 (Fol. 230b): The name of the monk in the previous addition is given as Rabban Isaiah, the son of the priest Moses. Addition 8 (Fol. 2a): On fol. 2 a is recorded the name of an Ignatius, patriarch of Antioch, and also of the metropolitan Hanna the Chaldean,. The name of a third reader or owner has been erased.
