Physical Description

Vellum, about 16 1/2 in. by 12 1/4, consisting of 84 leaves, many of which are much stained and torn. In all external respects this volume is precisely similar to Add. 12,147 . Foll. 33 and 34 are supplementary paper leaves, exactly similar to those described in Add. 12,147 . Fol. 63 has also been repaired with paper.

Hand 1 (major, Unspecified Syriac script): This manuscript is dated A. Gr. 1317, A.D. 1006.
Hand 2 (minor, Unspecified Syriac script): A more modern hand has added a supplementary service.
Hand 3 (minor, Unspecified Syriac script): See additions.
Decoration (Ornamentation): For specimens of ornaments see foll. 27 b and 30 a.

Additions

N.B., folio location may not be available for some items below.
N.B., items below may have been listed out of folio order in Wright's catalogue.
Addition 1 (Fol. 84a): Fol. 84 a contains the following note, similar to that in Add. 12,148, fol. 233 b , but much soiled and torn. It reads: "To the glory and honour of the Holy and Consubstantial Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, the exalted chief Abū 'Alī Zakarīyā, known as the Tagritan, used diligence and took pains concerning (this book), for the sake of the forgiveness of himself and his dead. It was written by the hands of the scribe Yeshūa', son of the late Andrew; of Hisn Zaid, in the house of Abū 'Alī Z. (may God pardon him and his dead), in the year 1317 of the Greeks (A.D. 1006), in the days of Mār John, the patriarch of Antioch, known as Bar 'Abdūn, and of Mār Zacharias, patriarch of Alexandria; and in the days of Mār Thomas, metropolitan of Jerusalem, and Mār Thomas, metropolitan of Tiberias, and Mār Theophilus, metropolitan of Damascus. And it was written for the holy convent of the Mother of God, in the desert of Scete , in the days of Mār David, the abbat of the convent, brother of Mār John (may the Lord exalt his memory), who was likewise abbat of the convent; and in the days of 'Abdā, a priest and monk of the church of Egypt, when Elias the priest was second (in authority) to the abbat of the said convent; and of the priests Mār Joseph, known as the Shaizarene (from Shaizar,), and Mār Elias, known as Yarībā(?), and Mār Kaumā, and Mār Moses, and Mār Yeshūa' bar Lala, and Mār Bar-saumā, and Mār Joseph Sīmandāyā, and Mār Salībā, and Mār Yeshūa', the brother of Rabban Bar-saumā, and Mār 'Abd al-Masīh, the archdeacon of the holy convent, and the deacon Mār Bar-saumā, and the famous solitary Rabban Taiyib, and Mār 'Abd al-Masīh bar Lauzī, and the rest of the brotherhood in this convent, which is their house of sojourn. Do thou, O Lord," etc. "So that, through their holy prayers, God the Messiah, may grant pardon to Abū 'Alī Z. and to the scribe Yeshūa', the son of Hannūn, (the son) of Andrew , (both) deceased, and to his mother Sīdanah(?). And I beg of thee, O discreet (reader), who art hereafter to read this record, to pray and say: God the Messiah, when thou comest in thy kingdom, remember Abū 'Alī Z. and his parents, and thy servant Yeshūa' and his father Hannūn, and his mother Sīdanah, and his brothers, the deceased Andrew, and the deceased Furaij(?), and Elisha and Saliba," etc. . Addition 2 (Fol. 84a): The two words, ܘܫ̇ܘܼܝܬ݁ ܒܐܘܣܝܐ, in the above note are evidently an alteration by a later hand, which has retouched several other portions of this note, in particular, the words that immediately follow, from ܚܘܣܝܐ to ܬܓܪܝܬܢܝܐ.
Addition 3: Some words were added by the scribe on the margin, of which there are still legible: "on the 23d of the month of Shĕbāt." . . . . .
Addition 4: The words ܠܒܗ ܘܐܦ in the above note are a later alteration. See Proverbs, xvii. 13.
Addition 5: The same person who frequently retouched the above, has added the words: "And also to the sinner 'Abda, who took pains and repaired this book, may the Lord grant forgiveness. Amen."
Addition 6: Below, there are indistinctly written, in the form of a cross, words. Under the name
Addition 7: Another person has written, below the above addition, ܏ܗ ܝܫܘܥ, "that is, Yeshūa';" which is correct, according to the alphabet of Bar-daisān.
Addition 8 (Fol. 1a): On fol. 1 a, there are two notes, the one written by the priest Joseph Sīmandāyā, A. Gr. 1320, A.D. 1009.
Addition 9 (Fol. 1a): The other note on 1 a records the names of the priests Bar-saumā and his brother Yeshūa'; all three monks of the convent of S. Mary Deipara, and named in the list on foll. 84 a. The letters ܚܗܗܘܝ are indistinct. ܨܕܡܥ seems to be a mistake for ܝܘܣܦ=ܨܕܡܟ. The year is expressed by the Coptic arithmetical figures for 1000 (), 300 (), and 20 (), more commonly or and .
