Severus of Antioch. The sixth book of the select epistles of Severus of Antioch, translated from the Greek by the priest Athanasius of Nisibis

Physical Description

Vellum, about 11 1/8 in. by 7 1/2, consisting of 103 leaves, some of which are much stained and torn, especially foll. 1, 2, 7, 8, 48, 58, 102 and 103. The quires, now only 11 in number, are signed with letters. Two quires are missing after fol. 58, and several after fol. 98. Each page is divided into two columns, of from 35 to 38 lines. Many Greek proper names and other words are expressed on the margins in Greek letters.

Hand 1 (major, Estrangela script): This volume is written in a good, regular Estrangělā of the viiith cent.

Addition 1 (Fol. 58): At the end of the first section, two quires are missing after fol. 58, which contained the remainder of no. 53, nos. 54—62, and a part of no. 63, which last letter is addressed to the deacon Mishael (Michael, or Misael?). Some of the missing letters are extant in Add. 14,600, foll. 56—66 . ܠܘܬ ܡܝܫܐܝܠ ܡܫܡܫܢܐ
Addition x: The remaining letters of the fifth section, nos. 7-15, have been lost, as well as the whole of the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth tituli, and all but a very small portion of the last letter of the tenth (see Add. 14,600, fol. 85 seqq. ).

Addition 3: Another note on the same page states that these letters were translated from the Greek by the priest Athanasius of Nisibis, who dictated them to the priest Severus, at the request of Matthew, bishop of Aleppo,Matthew I. See Le Quien, Or. Christ., t. ii., col. 1409 . and Daniel, bishop of Edessa, A. Gr. 980, A.D. 669. This was probably the same Athanasius who afterwards became patriarch of the Jacobites (A. Gr. 995). See Assemani, Bibl. Or., t. i., p. 493, t. ii., p. 335 ; Le Quien, Or.
